Competition Parameters : This competition assumes that the journey to Mars would take 9 months. And factors to be considered such as the diverse cultures represented by the 24 astronauts (backgrounds and relationships to be proposed ), the comfort in a cramped space, the absence of gravity, etc. Participants will design a communal payload volume (dimension outlined in the Design Guideline on the next page). In the design, it is assumed that the communal payload volume will have a connection to life support systems in a separate location on the spacecraft. Therefore, participants are invited to design only the astronauts’ habitation spaces with a cockpit in the communal payload volume. The habitation spaces can be designed as part of the spacecraft, or as an assembly of components fitted in the payload volume.
• Journey: 9 Months to Mars
• Site: Rocket Payload Volume (3D massing model provided)
• Design: Habitation spaces for 24 civilian / astronaut volunteers with a cockpit
An eternal mystery has always surrounded the relation between time and space. When humanity explores out into the wilderness of nothingness, the challenge is not only confined to designing a technically sound spacecraft. It also includes the challenge of addressing all the human factors within the timeline of the journey. Planning a timeline for a micro-society that will remain isolated for an extended period must be based on Co-Operation, Coordination & Communication. The basic theme of this design includes this CO3 ideology. While the number of astronauts and destination of this incredible journey remains constant due to the nature of the vessel, the reason for making the journey should remain open. Exploration, survival, research or curiosity- many human emotions can lead a person to this pathway. And due to the nature of the journey being so diverse, feelings in this different timeline can be unpredictable. So, the design goals included the opportunity of socialization and isolation according to every person's needs. There are 24 rooms for individuals with proper radiation protection and distinct sleeping pods. With mental balance, this system can also play a role in medical emergencies. The space allocation is designed by altering social spaces such as the gallery, dining or exercise zones inter-changing with the individualist spaces. This mission is not only about surviving in a confined space for six months, no matter the condition. It is about the most ancient thrill of exploration that eventually built our civilizations. The new generation will see ordinary people along with trained astronauts from different ethnicities and professional backgrounds being launched into space. That is why, the majority area in the vehicle is dedicated to exploring and gazing at the mesmerizing views, feeling the infinity, and normalizing the existence of the human heartbeat in the endlessness of space stery has always surrounded the relation between time and space. The notion of leaving a planet behind means leaving 7 billion people behind as well. It grants everyone a clean slate. While trained astronauts do visit the endlessness of space, such mission towards Mars refers to the birth of a new society. While we do expect to leave all that is corrupted in our civilization behind us, the truth is it will be hard for human beings to reshape themselves in short time. The vessel will work as an incubator of this new society and will also shape the new personalities. While the option of isolation and carrying out own routine works in a fully automated way will grant everyone a chance to be individualistic, the vastness of the freedom space will also work as a scope to build personalities. The endlessness of space and the opportunity to gaze upon it while carrying out day to day activities will give birth to new schools of thought, new philosophies, new ideologies- which will pave ways to build a new society in MARS. Every person on the journey will come from a different background and will shape
